2024 Lexus GX and TX Bring Style and Substance for Large Families
There are some big changes to Lexus’ SUV lineup for 2024. The popular RX is adding a plug-in hybrid variant with nearly 60 km of zero-emission range, while two all-new models can be found in a larger size and at a higher price point.
One benefits from a complete redesign that was 14 years in the making (seriously), and the other is a unique addition that fills the void left by the discontinuation of the three-row RX L. Let’s meet these two newcomers that are slated to hit the market between this fall and early next year.
2024 Lexus GX
Body-on-frame SUV fans can rest easy: the 2024 Lexus GX shares its GA-F architecture with the current Lexus LX 600. Obviously, styling is much more modern than it used to be, with designers aiming to give the vehicle a more rugged and more adventurous look—the kind that might sway Land Rover customers.
In fact, the first-ever GX Overtrail and Overtrail+ models caught all the attention during the reveal in Texas. Both stand out with a unique two-tone exterior, 33-inch all-terrain tires and aluminum skid plates, not to mention an electronic locking rear differential to go along with the full-time 4WD system and limited-slip Torsen differential. The company’s goal is to improve off-road capability without compromising luxury, comfort and refinement.
Inside the GX, there is still room for up to seven—minus one if you select a configuration that replaces the second-row bench with a pair of captain’s chairs. A 14-inch touchscreen proudly stands in the middle of the dashboard. Also standard is a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
In the engine department, the old V8 has been replaced by a twin-turbocharged 3.4-litre V6 producing 349 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. It’s mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, allowing Signature, Premium, Overtrail and Overtrail+ models to tow up to 8,000 pounds. According to Lexus, fuel consumption is estimated at 13.8 L/100 km in combined city-highway driving, regardless of model selection. If you want better efficiency, a hybrid powertrain is coming farther down the line, though we don’t have any details about it at the moment.
The 2024 Lexus GX will be manufactured in Tahara, Japan. Deliveries in Canada are scheduled to begin early next year.
2024 Lexus TX
As mentioned up top, the three-row RX L was a failed experiment, but the company hopes to successfully fill the gap left by its departure with the all-new 2024 Lexus TX, which is essentially a posher version of the Toyota Grand Highlander introduced earlier this year. Of course, it looks much different, embodying the luxury brand’s latest design language. The signature spindle grille up front has been reinterpreted with body-coloured horizontal slats, but it’s just as massive as you’d expect.
Lexus now has seven SUVs and crossovers in its lineup, and this is the third to offer three-row seating. Optionally, the second-row bench can be replaced by a pair of captain’s chairs, meaning the TX accommodates either six or seven people. On select models, drivers will face a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14-inch centre touchscreen powered by the new Lexus Interface multimedia system.
Things get even more interesting under the hood. Customers have three options starting with a turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that delivers 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The same engine can then be part of a hybrid system with a total output of 366 horsepower and 409 pound-feet of torque. While the transmission loses two gears, combined fuel consumption drops from 11.2 L/100 km to 9.8 L/100 km.
Finally, the top-line TX 550h+ is a plug-in hybrid that combines a 3.5-litre V6 with an electric motor and high-voltage battery, the capacity of which was not specified during the introduction. This one generates 406 horsepower, while zero-emission range is said to be 53 km. In hybrid operation, Lexus claims the vehicle manages 7.8 L/100 km.
Built in Indiana on the GA-K platform, the 2024 Lexus TX will go on sale starting this fall (TX 550h+ to come at a later date). Ready for big-time adventures with the whole family?
